Roof coatings have now been around for approximately 30 years, they are very popular in Australia and America where householders get their roofs coated on a regular basis to cut down solar absorption, and by doing so reduce their air conditioning power bill (not yet a big problem in the United Kingdom).

While on holiday in Australia in 1995 one of the founders of Aquashield was staying with relations who were having their roof coated, he got chatting to the people doing the work and from that conversation he identified a potential business opportunity within the United Kingdom. On his return, he realised that there was very little domestic roof preventative maintenance carried out, extensive market research also showed that there was a huge gap in the market for a low cost alternative to re-roofing.

Aquashield was established in 1997 and originally based in Scotland, where there is no shortage of moss on roofs. A chemist was employed in conjunction with a major UK paint manufacturer, and a water based acrylic (mirco porous) roof coating was perfected.

Local authority planners were contacted as part of the colour selection process, so that the five coating colours chosen by Aquashield would comply with conservation requirements. Extensive accelerated weathering tests were also preformed to ensure that the coating would exceed the 10-year guarantee period and COSHH (Care of Substances Hazardous to Health) tests were approved. The unique “AQUATHERM” roof coating formula is ONLY available in the UK from Aquashield, as it is exclusively manufactured under a rolling licensing agreement.

Based on the success of Aquashield in Scotland, it was decided to roll out the business model nationally and there are now Aquashield depots throughout the country.

Two things that make Aquashield different from other home improvement companies in the UK is that we do not employ sub-contractors allowing us to maintain a high standard of workmanship and we do not demand final payment, until our customers is completely satisfied with the work.
